Quant au quartz fondu, son nom pourrait laisser penser qu&#039;il s&#039;agit simplement de quartz fondu. Or, la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 est bien plus complexe. Il s&#039;agit de deux mat\u00e9riaux totalement diff\u00e9rents\u00a0: le quartz fondu est un cristal naturel, tandis que le quartz fondu est un verre synth\u00e9tique. Au c\u0153ur de la cro\u00fbte terrestre, de nombreux processus g\u00e9ologiques se d\u00e9roulent sur des centaines de millions d&#039;ann\u00e9es. Les mol\u00e9cules de dioxyde de silicium s&#039;assemblent pour former un r\u00e9seau tridimensionnel extr\u00eamement r\u00e9gulier. Le quartz fondu, quant \u00e0 lui, est un verre amorphe synth\u00e9tique. Les temp\u00e9ratures requises varient selon le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 de fabrication. La fusion directe du quartz naturel n\u00e9cessite un chauffage \u00e0 environ 1750\u20131900 \u00b0C. En revanche, les m\u00e9thodes de synth\u00e8se plus avanc\u00e9es consistent en l&#039;hydrolyse et le d\u00e9p\u00f4t directs de sources de silicium gazeuses de haute puret\u00e9 (comme le t\u00e9trachlorure de silicium, SiCl\u2084) en une masse vitreuse au sein d&#039;une flamme \u00e0 haute temp\u00e9rature (environ 1500\u20131600 \u00b0C), sans passage par fusion-solidification. Les atomes sont fig\u00e9s avant d&#039;avoir le temps de s&#039;aligner correctement, ce qui donne une structure amorphe caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par un d\u00e9sordre \u00e0 longue port\u00e9e et un ordre \u00e0 courte port\u00e9e. Le produit final peut atteindre une puret\u00e9 en dioxyde de silicium sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 99,991\u00a0% TP3T, avec des niveaux d&#039;impuret\u00e9s mesur\u00e9s en parties par milliard (ppb). Transmittance UV en mode contact<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsqu&#039;on compare un cristal de quartz standard \u00e0 un quartz fondu synth\u00e9tique de haute puret\u00e9, la diff\u00e9rence de transmittance dans le proche ultraviolet (NUV) (300\u2013400 nm) est n\u00e9gligeable\u00a0; le quartz naturel de qualit\u00e9 optique reste donc adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 cette gamme spectrale. La v\u00e9ritable diff\u00e9rence se situe dans l&#039;ultraviolet profond (DUV, &lt;\u00a0250\u00a0nm)\u00a0: en raison d&#039;impuret\u00e9s telles que le fer et l&#039;aluminium, ainsi que de d\u00e9fauts cristallins, le quartz naturel pr\u00e9sente une forte augmentation d&#039;absorption dans la bande UV profonde, le rendant impropre \u00e0 ces applications. \u00c0 l&#039;inverse, le quartz fondu synth\u00e9tique de haute puret\u00e9 laisse passer la lumi\u00e8re UV profonde (jusqu&#039;\u00e0 185\u00a0nm, voire des longueurs d&#039;onde plus courtes) presque sans obstacle. C&#039;est pourquoi il est indispensable dans les circuits optiques d&#039;\u00e9clairage des syst\u00e8mes de lithographie pour semi-conducteurs, des syst\u00e8mes laser excim\u00e8res ArF (193\u00a0nm) et des lentilles optiques de pr\u00e9cision pour l&#039;ultraviolet profond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\">2. Stabilit\u00e9 thermique<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le quartz naturel est confront\u00e9 \u00e0 une double menace. Premi\u00e8rement, l&#039;anisotropie de la dilatation thermique de sa structure cristalline \u2014 environ 13,7 \u00d7 10\u207b\u2076\/K selon l&#039;axe a et 7,1 \u00d7 10\u207b\u2076\/K selon l&#039;axe c \u2014. Lors d&#039;un refroidissement ou d&#039;un chauffage rapide, les contraintes internes in\u00e9gales peuvent facilement provoquer des fissures\u00a0; les mineurs de l&#039;Antiquit\u00e9 exploitaient ce principe en enflammant les veines de quartz puis en les refroidissant brutalement \u00e0 l&#039;eau. Deuxi\u00e8mement, et plus critique encore, le quartz subit une transition de phase \u03b1-\u03b2 \u00e0 573\u00a0\u00b0C, accompagn\u00e9e d&#039;une variation de volume soudaine d&#039;environ 0,81\u00a0TP3T. Cela signifie qu&#039;une fois ce seuil de temp\u00e9rature franchi, le quartz subit des dommages structuraux irr\u00e9versibles \u2014 un d\u00e9faut fondamental qu&#039;il est impossible d&#039;\u00e9viter compl\u00e8tement, m\u00eame en chauffant tr\u00e8s lentement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le quartz fondu, en revanche, est exceptionnellement stable. La raison principale r\u00e9side dans la grande flexibilit\u00e9 des angles de liaison Si-O-Si amorphes. Ses modes de vibration phononiques uniques g\u00e9n\u00e8rent un effet de contraction lat\u00e9rale lors du chauffage, compensant ainsi la dilatation thermique normale. Il en r\u00e9sulte un coefficient de dilatation thermique extr\u00eamement faible, de l&#039;ordre de 0,55 \u00d7 10\u207b\u2076\/K, parmi les plus bas de tous les mat\u00e9riaux d&#039;ing\u00e9nierie. Il est environ vingt fois inf\u00e9rieur \u00e0 celui du verre ordinaire et ne pr\u00e9sente aucune transition de phase cristalline. M\u00eame chauff\u00e9 jusqu&#039;\u00e0 incandescence puis plong\u00e9 directement dans de l&#039;eau glac\u00e9e, il en ressortira intact. Cette r\u00e9sistance exceptionnelle aux chocs thermiques en fait un mat\u00e9riau id\u00e9al pour les hublots de vaisseaux spatiaux, le tr\u00e9filage de fibres optiques et les proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de fabrication de semi-conducteurs o\u00f9 des variations de temp\u00e9rature extr\u00eames doivent \u00eatre support\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0693e3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">04 Pi\u00e9zo\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, duret\u00e9 et autres propri\u00e9t\u00e9s<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Une autre propri\u00e9t\u00e9 remarquable des cristaux de quartz est l&#039;effet pi\u00e9zo\u00e9lectrique. Lorsqu&#039;une pression est appliqu\u00e9e, une tension est g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e \u00e0 leurs extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s\u00a0; lorsqu&#039;un courant \u00e9lectrique est appliqu\u00e9, ils vibrent avec pr\u00e9cision. Ceci est d\u00fb au fait que leur r\u00e9seau cristallin ordonn\u00e9 appartient \u00e0 un groupe d&#039;espace non centrosym\u00e9trique (syst\u00e8me cristallin trigonal, groupe ponctuel 32). Les forces ext\u00e9rieures provoquent un d\u00e9placement relatif des centres de charges positives et n\u00e9gatives, g\u00e9n\u00e9rant ainsi une tension macroscopique. Ce principe est exploit\u00e9 dans les montres \u00e0 quartz et les oscillateurs d&#039;horlogerie des appareils \u00e9lectroniques. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans le quartz fondu, les atomes sont dispos\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re al\u00e9atoire et statistiquement isotrope, de sorte que les centres des charges positives et n\u00e9gatives co\u00efncident toujours, ce qui annule l&#039;effet pi\u00e9zo\u00e9lectrique. Il devient ainsi un isolant extr\u00eamement stable, pr\u00e9sentant une meilleure inertie chimique et une homog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 optique accrue. En termes de propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques, la diff\u00e9rence entre les deux est moins importante qu&#039;on ne pourrait le croire. Les cristaux de quartz ont une duret\u00e9 Mohs d&#039;environ 7, tandis que le quartz fondu (verre de quartz) se situe \u00e9galement entre 6,5 et 7 sur l&#039;\u00e9chelle de Mohs, avec une duret\u00e9 Vickers d&#039;environ 950 \u00e0 1000 HV, comparable \u00e0 celle du quartz monocristallin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0693e3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">05 Clarification du concept<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans les milieux professionnels, lorsqu&#039;on \u00e9voque le quartz fondu, il est pr\u00e9f\u00e9rable de demander\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Quelles mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res et m\u00e9thodes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es pour le produire\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb En effet, la terminologie chinoise et anglaise peut facilement pr\u00eater \u00e0 confusion dans ce contexte, et cette distinction d\u00e9termine directement la qualit\u00e9 du mat\u00e9riau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les mat\u00e9riaux pr\u00e9par\u00e9s \u00e0 partir de mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res chimiques de haute puret\u00e9 (comme le SiCl\u2084) par des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de synth\u00e8se chimique tels que l&#039;hydrolyse en phase gazeuse sont appel\u00e9s \u00ab silice fondue \u00bb ou quartz fondu synth\u00e9tique. Ils offrent une puret\u00e9 maximale et une transmittance optimale dans l&#039;ultraviolet profond, avec une teneur en ions OH\u207b pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment contr\u00f4lable. Ceci en fait un mat\u00e9riau de premier choix dans les domaines de l&#039;optique et des semi-conducteurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les produits obtenus par fusion directe de cristaux de quartz naturel de haute puret\u00e9 sont appel\u00e9s \u00ab\u00a0quartz fondu\u00a0\u00bb ou quartz fondu naturel. Leurs performances surpassent largement celles du cristal naturel. Cependant, leur puret\u00e9 et leur transmittance dans l&#039;ultraviolet profond sont inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 celles des produits synth\u00e9tiques, et leur teneur en ions OH\u207b est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Leur co\u00fbt se situe donc entre les deux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#039;ensemble de ces mat\u00e9riaux est d\u00e9sign\u00e9 sous le terme g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de verre de quartz, qui englobe tous les produits \u00e0 base de dioxyde de silicium amorphe de haute puret\u00e9. La distinction entre silice fondue et quartz fondu est une norme fondamentale du secteur. Lors de l&#039;achat de composants optiques ou de la consultation de documentation technique, ces deux termes ne doivent jamais \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s indiff\u00e9remment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le quartz fondu n&#039;est donc pas du quartz, mais une forme pure de verre.
